This project’s aim is to provide short term accommodation for Swinburne University students, specifically those who are on hawthorn campus. The site is located within a quiet neighborhood in Hawthorn close to the university itself, with a variety of amenities close by. It is designed in a way that would allow both domestic and international students to have a place in which can be described as a retreat as well as a second home.
The design is inspired by the architecture of Swinburne but with a contemporary twist, focusing on the materiality and external structure as well as the landscape. Form has played a huge role in the design as subtle curves are implemented in most spaces such as curved walls and joinery. In addition, circular windows and furniture pieces and accessories have also been incorporated which create a connection with the curves and add softness to the Accommodation. The chosen colour palette was inspired by the Australian landscape but with a few unexpected pops of colour.
The accommodation consists of two floors. The first being a communal space which would allow students to be able to interact with each other but still have their own space and enjoy different activities.
The second floor is where the studios are located and students can have their own humble abode in which they can relax whenever they want to stay alone.
Both floors have a 360-degree view of the courtyard area which helps allow natural light to seep through and create a sense of privacy while enjoying nature.
A large kitchen is situated on the first floor with the aim of encouraging students to interact with each other while cooking meals.
